Mercedes-Benz may have brought back the idea of a four-door coupé over a decade ago with the CLS but it’s Audi who have capitalised on it the best, chalking up over 250,000 sales of the A7 making it the class best seller. The new A7 has big boots to fill.


Based on the same MLB platform as the A8, the new A7 is not a complete clone of the flagship model as its wheelbase is shorter and it has a 66mm lower roofline, despite sneaking in 5mm more headroom.


It may have started as a niche segment to throw a curve ball into the conservative mindset of saloon buyers, but the four-door coupé has rapidly found its home in the luxury model portfolio of all the major euro car brands.


Mercedes set the trend over a decade ago with the CLS and BMW followed suit with a brace of models across its range, but Audi’s A7 has taken the lions share of the market, clocking up 250,000 sales, making it the most successful four-door coupé on the road.


The new 2018 model features a cleaner, more contemporary nose while the tail is a complete departure from old, fitting in Audi’s full width LED light bar to give the car girth.
