Playing For Keeps
McLaren Automotive came out with all guns blazing in 2011 with plans to knock Ferrari and Lamborghini from their supercar pedestals and they certainly gave them a fright. Next up was the mainstream sports car boys at Porsche and AMG with this volume chasing 570S Coupe.
For those in the sports car game like Porsche, Aston Martin and AMG who watched new boy McLaren take on the supercar heavyweights in 2011, the thought of a more mainstream competitor to march in to their territory was a frightening prospect.
While the 12C, 650S and P1 were pushing and shoving the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini around, news of a more mainstream 570S to take on the Porsche 911 turbo, AMG GT-S and Audi R8 V10 gave the establishment something to worry about.
A Formula One business has the ability to adapt at lightning pace to market needs and after establishing its road car operations at the top end against Lamborghini and Ferrari, the 570S allows McLaren to take on the volume sports car guys at their own game. [To be continued...]
McLaren 570S: Bringing Formula One tech down to the more affordable sports cars.
McLaren’s initial mandate when it re-entered the world of production cars was to take on arch nemesis, Ferrari and beat them on the street as well. It’s debatable how well that worked but now Porsche and Audi are in their sights with the volume chasing 570S.
For years nothing could touch the Porsche 911 as the premium sports car, a little below Ferrari but above BMW and AMG and in bigger volumes than Aston Martin or Lotus.
Audi arrived with the R8 and suddenly the option was there, so not wanting to stand back on its laurels after the release of the 12C, P1 and 650S, the small team from Woking jumped into the volume end of town with the McLaren 570S.
All these manufacturers have great histories in motor racing, most notably endurance racing such as the Le Mans 24-hour, but Formula One is a cut-throat game that requires super quick reflexes and the ability to adapt to change in record time. [To be continued...]
